In the beginning, while creating heaven and earth, God declared, "Let there be light!" (Genesis 1:3) In context, He was illuminating His creation. But there was much more. God began immediately illuminating His creation, humanity, which He had made in His image. After placing Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, He commanded, " Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Genesis 2:16, 17) When He brought Noah from the ark, He gave more commandments. By giving commandments, God revealed His holiness, that aspect of His character which separates Him from His creation. He told His people that He required them to be separate from other men. It was on Mount Sinai that God delivered, by hand, a masterpiece still revered today by Jews and Christians alike--Torah. Speaking of Torah, King David wrote in Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Though in this chapter, King David was extolling the beauty of Torah, I do not believe that here he is speaking of Torah. Then of what (or Who) is he speaking? St. John the Apostle wrote in his gospel,In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1-3) The Word of God is not a book, or a compilation of writings by holy men. The Word of God is a Person--our Lord, Jesus Christ. St John wrote, "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." (John 1:9) Jesus, Himself said, "...I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (John 8:12) Jesus is the Lamp unto our feet and the Light unto our Path. He is the Light of the world Who exposes our sins and illuminates our way to God. Jesus, "the Author and Finisher of our Faith is the Torah's Light." This website is lovingly devoted to Him. |
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, "I am the light of the world:
